The Gutiérrez Guitar of Freginal: Restoration, Sound, and Its Historical Context in Menorca
Throughout the nineteenth century, Menorca emerged as an important centre for guitar making, home to renowned masters such as Joan Gutiérrez Flores and Joan Riudavets Prieto. The last one, a highly respected luthier, even built a guitar for King Ferdinand VII—an instrument now preserved in the Galería de las Colecciones Reales in Madrid.
This artisanal tradition continued into the twentieth century and remains alive today, thanks to several contemporary instrument makers who uphold this legacy through high-quality craftsmanship.
The conference will be led by Alexander Hopkins, a luthier specialising in plucked string instruments, and Ksènia Axelroud, a performer specialising in the Romantic guitar, who will together offer a complementary perspective on the construction and performance of this emblematic instrument.
